BIOGRAPHY:
Twice the victim of violent crime, Joe Brummer has spent years exploring
why people commit acts of violence against each other. He has studied
nonviolence, conflict resolution and clocked hundreds of hours at the
table facilitating mediations. In December 2008, he attended the 10-day, International Intensive in
Nonviolent Communication with Marshall Rosenberg. In May 2008, he
completed a three-day restorative justice and Victim/offender mediation training program through the
Community Mediation Center of RI and accepted the Center’s invitation to
serve on the Advisory Board for the Juvenile Restorative Justice
Program. In September 2007, he completed the Basic Mediator Training
through the Center and, for the past year, has been volunteering at
least once a month in the RI District Court doing small claims and
landlord tenant cases. He also does mediation for Community
Mediation, Inc. in New Haven, CT. In 2006, he completed a Training of Trainers
Program in Nonviolence through the Institute for the Study and Practice
of Nonviolence in Providence, Rhode Island. As a consultant to the Institute, he
worked to develop and present a refresher curriculum in nonviolence
tailored to seventh and eighth grade students for a middle school in
Pawtucket, RI. He is now presenting workshops based on Nonviolent
Communication for organizations around New England.
Prior to moving to New Haven, Joe was the Community Organizer/Assistant
Training Director for the Rhode Island Council of Community Mental
Health Organizations. In his role there, he developed and presented
workshops in Advocacy and Effective Legislative Communication for the
Council’s member organizations and other community groups.
In his spare time, Joe is an amateur photographer, musician and writer.
He enjoys organic cooking, hiking, and traveling. He is a regular
contributor to Get Magazine in Rhode Island. He has two
American-Eskimo dogs and lives in Connecticut with his partner of nine
years.
