BIOGRAPHY:

Twice the victim of violent crime, Joe Brummer has spent years exploring why people commit acts of violence against each other.  He has studied nonviolence, conflict resolution and clocked hundreds of hours at the table facilitating mediations.  In December 2008, he attended the 10-day, International Intensive in Nonviolent Communication with Marshall Rosenberg. In May 2008, he completed a three-day restorative justice and Victim/offender mediation training program through the Community Mediation Center of RI and accepted the Center’s invitation to serve on the Advisory Board for the Juvenile Restorative Justice Program. In September 2007, he completed the Basic Mediator Training through the Center and, for the past year, has been volunteering at least once a month in the RI District Court doing small claims and landlord tenant cases.  He also does mediation for Community Mediation, Inc. in New Haven, CT.   In 2006, he completed a Training of Trainers Program in Nonviolence through the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence in Providence, Rhode Island. As a consultant to the Institute, he worked to develop and present a refresher curriculum in nonviolence tailored to seventh and eighth grade students for a middle school in Pawtucket, RI. He is now presenting workshops based on Nonviolent Communication for organizations around New England.

Prior to moving to New Haven, Joe was the Community Organizer/Assistant Training Director for the Rhode Island Council of Community Mental Health Organizations. In his role there, he developed and presented workshops in Advocacy and Effective Legislative Communication for the Council’s member organizations and other community groups.

In his spare time, Joe is an amateur photographer, musician and writer.  He enjoys organic cooking, hiking, and traveling. He is a regular contributor to Get Magazine in Rhode Island.  He has two American-Eskimo dogs and lives in Connecticut with his partner of nine years.

You can learn more about Joe by reading his daily blog, "Speak Compassion."
